For the first time, the title “European Capital of Culture” has been awarded to an inner-alpine, rural region. In 2024, the Salzkammergut region in the heart of Austria will play host to numerous artists and cultural professionals, but also to students who will spend a countryside semester here.
Eight students from all over the world are offered the opportunity to spend a RURASMUS semester in one of eight municipalities of the Salzkammergut. On the basis of concrete projects, they will explore the question of what future living in rural areas will look like. The eight RURASMUS projects are thus making a contribution to the 2024 Capital of Culture, which is dedicated to examining the region, its history, its present and its future.

What will living in rural areas look like in the future?

What will living in rural areas look like in the future?
Under the title “RURASMUS – Students for New Living in Rural Area,” international students set out to find innovative housing ideas for the region. Working and living styles have also changed in rural areas. The associated challenges are different: it is about affordability, about sharing resources, about living together and rethinking classic forms of living. Future housing can mean the conversion of existing buildings as well as the further development of single-family housing estates or dense forms of housing close to the city center.
There are numerous reasons to spend a summer semester in the European Capital of Culture. One of them is bound to be the beautiful landscape of the Salzkammergut region, with its crystal-clear lakes and breathtaking mountain peaks. The fusion of rural life with a more international arts and culture program in tune with the times, is certainly part of it as well. In addition, RURAMUS offers a great opportunity to make a practical contribution to rural living of the future. This will be an unforgettable countryside semester!
