St. Konrad is a small municipality, in which, like everywhere else in the Salzkammergut, the pressure on housing is great. It is difficult for young people to find affordable housing. On the other hand, an ageing population often lives in underused residential property. The housing issue lacks perspectives and alternatives for both interest groups.
For the municipality, it is no longer an option to continue creating space for new family homes. Instead, it wants to proactively combat urban sprawl and consider options for “denser living”.
With the abandonment of a large butchery and abattoir in the middle of the village, a new spatial resource is opening up for St.Konrad, which will be crucial in reformulating a response in the housing issue of young and old.
