Climate change and the war in Ukraine pose major challenges for local authorities. With over 20,000 inhabitants, they have to take measures to save energy. In the search for answers to the energy transition, the city of Oberzent faces various challenges, which arise primarily from the population density of the 19 districts and thus also from the existing infrastructure density. For smaller and less densely populated districts with 200 – 400 inhabitants, different solutions are needed due to the various basic requirements. The Odenwald energy cooperative has already recorded the actual energy consumption in an energy transition monitor. Further data collection is required for the smaller, uneconomical units in order to create a comprehensive picture of the current situation and, based on this, to identify potential energy infrastructures and develop solutions.

For the less densely populated districts of Oberzent, different solutions are needed for the energy transition than for those districts with a high population and infrastructure density. What options for renewable energy supply are there for the less densely populated and smaller, less economical units? What are the ways out of fossil fuels and what could possible solutions look like? For the creation of an energy spatial plan, the framework conditions in the Odenwald, in terms of energy spatial planning, offer ideal conditions for an examination as part of a master’s/diploma thesis for several reasons: The transformation vectors of energy saving, renewable energies and efficient mobility are well known in the region; – Oberzent has a favorable size for stocktaking and evaluation, and data availability is also good; – There are established cooperation structures within and between the sub-areas, not only between “stakeholders” but also with civil society; – The role of “looking at the big picture of the energy transition” is currently unoccupied.
