The LEADER region Mostlandl Hausruck is located in the heart of Upper Austria and has 33 member municipalities, none of which has more than 5,000 inhabitants. Here, too, the issue of vacancies is a growing problem. In recent years, the number of unused buildings/business premises has risen. Inns and shops are closing, leaving behind places that are characterised by a high proportion of vacancies. In addition to an unsightly townscape and the loss of economic activity, vacancies in communities also have a significant social impact due to a lack of amenities.
In the past, proactive attempts have already been made to address the issue and take measures to counteract it. Despite the obvious challenges, the regional management sees the vacancy issue primarily as an opportunity for sustainable development and revitalisation of the municipalities. Initial successes can be seen in individual municipalities in the region through the implementation of the Vacancy Action Programme, which supports the creation of concepts for the activation of vacant properties, the reuse of derelict buildings and the development of town centres by the province of Upper Austria. However, the LEADER region is also concerned with finding a holistic approach. Could regional vacancy management be such a possibility?
