For Michaelnbach (population 1,300), involving the population in the future development of the town has been a tradition for many years. Its motto ‘Together we make our Michaelnbach worth living in’ makes the municipality’s fundamental understanding clear: the population and politicians are jointly responsible for shaping the living environment. From May 2024, Michaelnbach will also be part of the network of future towns in Austria. In recent years, the municipality has already implemented numerous projects, such as securing local supplies by building a local shopping centre, revitalising the village inn, modern premises for clubs, a lively village centre and much more. In autumn 2024, the people of Michaelnbach will once again be working on the future of the village. One focus will be on important issues relating to spatial planning.

As part of a participatory process, topics relevant to the future are to be developed. These include dealing with vacancies, (land) resources, development perspectives and scenarios and spatial planning issues. The results will be incorporated into the revision of the zoning plan and the local development concept. How and where does Michaelnbach want to develop? How does the participatory format of citizen involvement and, in particular, a citizens’ council work in practice? What is innovative and contemporary local development? Which stakeholders are involved and how can they be reached and coordinated? How can awareness-raising for sustainable spatial planning work? As part of a RURASMUS semester, there is the opportunity to become part of this open process and gain practical experience: the aim is to actively communicate, contribute creative ideas to the ongoing process and draw up proposals for the future-oriented development of the municipality and further develop the local development concept – in cooperation with an innovative spatial planner.
